I HOLD YOUR PETALS CLOSELY

an exclusive collaboration between Alymamah Rashed, La Makanerie and Hunna Art

'One flower leads to another and one petal holds one another.
Each native flower from the fleeting spring of Kuwait made this watercolor.
Each bloom births an eye in the sky'

Alymamah Rashed is an artist whose work resonates with the rhythms of her natural surroundings. In this piece, she captures the fleeting beauty of Kuwait’s spring, immortalizing it through flowers gathered along her daily journey - from her commute to work, through her neighborhood, and on the island of Failaka.

Rashed was drawn to the Ruby docks (Humaith), yellow Rhanterium epapposum (Arfaj), and hibiscus flowers (found in Kuwait, Italy, and France). Each flower unfolds to reveal its essence, conjuring a metamorphic celebration of spring.

With each leaf's gentle caress of its petals, the spirit of every bloom is preserved, creating a garden of everlasting spring.

Craftsmanship is not a trend. It doesn't disappear from one season to the next, and is founded on a close link with the ethical principles and sustainable practices that must shape fashion. Supporting craftsmanship is to value creation that endures, and that carries with it a history.

At La Makanerie, we work in a spirit of slowness and scarcity, the opposite of fast fashion. Fast fashion is in no way comparable to the work we do with our partner atelier, which is family-run, small-scale, and prides itself on concentrating on the details. Our garments are made from silk and wool woven just a few kilometers from the workshop, according to a strict label which guarantees production free from toxic chemicals, where waste water resulting from processing is treated and where staff work under decent wage and health conditions.

For this very special collection, we chose to work with a different kind of silk, in the image of Alymamah Rashed's artwork. Luminous and strong, yet lively and organic. "I hold your petals closely” is the story of a special silk, where silk cocoons are treated in the most natural way possible. Left to their authentic life cycle, silkworms hatch naturally, breaking the thread of their natural envelope. To weave the silk that gives birth to our scarves, the threads must be joined and knotted, giving the fabric an exceptional consistency. We chose a textured silk, like our intimate stories, where the knots are not erased but delicately exposed. We wanted them to reflect your identity, and the stories you'll create with your scarf.

Her work negotiates her female subjectivity, regional folklore, and the everyday banal objects that Alymamah Rashed encounters as well as the rapid social shifts that she has witnessed, such as the fast industrialisation of the Gulf region.
